Imagine walking down the street when suddenly chaos erupts around you.
This terrifying scene unfolded recently in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, when a man and a 14-year-old girl found themselves at the mercy of two aggressive dogs that had escaped from a nearby property.
The Attack Unfolds
Captured on video, the distressing incident occurred at around 5 PM on a Sunday afternoon on Dagnam Crescent.
Witnesses reported seeing a Mastiff and a Cane Corso on the loose, causing panic in the area. One local, trying to help, managed to put one dog on a lead.
However, as the man attempted to untangle the lead from the other dog’s legs, the second dog lunged at him.
In a desperate attempt to escape, the man began to back away while yelling for help.
Unfortunately, the dog on the lead also attacked him, leading to a chaotic scene where he was knocked to the ground, and the other dog joined in the fray.
Community Response
As the horrifying situation escalated, two bystanders rushed to assist.
One person tried to hit the dogs to deter them, while the man on the ground struggled to flee.
Despite their efforts, he fell again as another bystander attempted to pull the aggressive dog away from him.
The 47-year-old victim sustained severe cuts and puncture wounds across his body.
He was quickly transported to the hospital, where he underwent surgery, and he remains hospitalized as of now.
The 14-year-old girl who tried to intervene suffered only minor injuries.
Police Intervention
When the police arrived, one of the dogs had already been tied to a lamppost, while the second remained on the loose, posing a significant threat to public safety.
Officers managed to secure the Mastiff in a nearby garden, but they couldn’t safely contain it.
Ultimately, they made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize the dog on the scene.
Authorities arrested two individuals connected to the incident: a 21-year-old man on suspicion of possessing a dangerously out-of-control dog and obstructing a police officer, and a 39-year-old woman under similar charges.
Both have since been released on police bail.
A Call for Responsibility
Chief Inspector Emma Cheney addressed the incident, emphasizing the alarming rise in dog attacks within the community.
She highlighted that the police had to dispatch multiple firearms and response officers to ensure safety during this episode.
The National Police Air Service was also involved, monitoring the situation from above.
Cheney urged dog owners to take their responsibilities seriously: “If you are a dog owner, think about your circumstances and what steps you can take to increase everyone’s safety.
You may think ‘this won’t happen to me,’ but it can happen to anyone, and as the owner, you will be accountable for your pet’s actions.”
In light of this harrowing event, it’s crucial for dog owners to be vigilant and ensure their pets are secure to prevent similar incidents in the future.
