Luxury Cancun resort defends decision as American couple remains in maximum security prison for disputed credit card charges

What was supposed to be another relaxing getaway for Christy and Paul Akeo quickly turned into a legal nightmare.

The couple, who arrived in Cancun from Michigan, were immediately detained and thrown into a maximum-security prison.

Now, nearly a month later, they remain behind bars, caught in the middle of a legal battle that has drawn international attention.

Their daughter, Lindsey, has been fighting tirelessly to clear their names.

She claims her parents are innocent victims of a corrupt system, unfairly targeted because they disputed hefty credit card charges linked to a timeshare deal gone wrong.

Resort Fires Back at Fraud Allegations

While Lindsey insists her parents are being unfairly accused, the Palace Hotel in Cancun has come forward with a very different story.

Resort representatives claim the couple committed fraud by disputing over $116,000 in legitimate charges and even encouraged other vacationers to do the same.

According to the hotel, Christy and Paul misused their timeshare membership by offering discounted stays and exclusive perks to others through social media—something the resort says directly violated their contract.

In a statement to ABC, the resort alleged that “Paul and Christy Akeo fraudulently disputed legitimate credit card charges and publicly encouraged others to do the same.”

How a Timeshare Investment Spiraled Out of Control

The controversy dates back to 2016 when the couple first bought into the Palace Resorts timeshare program.

Over the years, they repeatedly upgraded their membership, eventually investing a staggering $1.4 million.

Christy frequently posted online about her love for the resort, even boasting that she visited once a month to escape Michigan’s dreary weather.

But things started to unravel when the resort allegedly began restricting the couple’s benefits.

Christy claimed that after referring so many new members, she and Paul had accumulated dozens of free week-long stays.

However, the resort reportedly canceled some of their upcoming reservations, arguing that they had breached their contract.

Financial Disputes Lead to Legal Trouble

Believing they were being treated unfairly, the Akeos decided to dispute a series of charges on their credit cards between 2021 and 2022, totaling $116,000.

Their credit card company sided with them, issuing a refund.

However, this move provoked a strong response from Palace Resorts, which took legal action against them.

Adding to the controversy, Christy allegedly encouraged others to follow suit.

Posts from her social media accounts advised fellow timeshare holders to report their credit cards as lost or stolen to prevent further charges and to simply stop making payments to the resort.

This, according to Palace Resorts, amounted to fraud.

A Legal Battle with No End in Sight

The situation escalated when Mexican authorities arrested the couple on an Interpol warrant.

Photos of their detainment circulated in Mexican media, fueling speculation about the case.

A judge has ruled that the resort has six months to build its case against them, meaning Christy and Paul will remain in prison for the foreseeable future.

Their daughter Lindsey has described their imprisonment as “a living hell.”

She claims her mother has lost 25 pounds in just 20 days because prison authorities are providing food that she is allergic to.

She also alleges that her parents have been subjected to harsh conditions as a direct result of Palace Resorts’ “corruption, extortion, retaliation, and blackmail.”

A Call for Help as the Case Gains Attention

Lindsey has taken to social media to plead for help, hoping to attract the attention of high-profile figures, including former President Donald Trump.

She insists her parents were simply trying to defend themselves against an unjust system and questions how a few Facebook posts could lead to such severe consequences.

Meanwhile, the case has sparked concerns among other Palace Resort members, many of whom have voiced fears that they too could face legal trouble for disputing charges.

“Guess we’re never going back to Mexico since we filed a dispute with our credit card company and they found in our favor… we might get arrested as well,” one former customer wrote online.

With the legal battle dragging on and the couple’s future uncertain, Christy and Paul’s case serves as a stark warning about the risks involved in high-stakes timeshare disputes.

As their family fights to secure their release, the world is watching to see how this dramatic saga unfolds.
