On Saturday, February 22, 2025, a devastating incident took place in the Mulhouse market, resulting in the death of 69-year-old Lino Sousa Loureiro.

According to reports, Loureiro was fatally stabbed by Brahim Abdessemed while attempting to defend police officers during a chaotic scene at the covered Canal market square.

The attack left Loureiro with a fatal chest wound, and he tragically succumbed to his injuries in the emergency vehicle on the way to the hospital.

The Heroic Actions of Lino Sousa Loureiro

Lino Sousa Loureiro, originally from Ermesinde near Porto, Portugal, moved to France in 1992.

He was a married man and a father to one child.

On the fateful day of the attack, Loureiro was at the market, reportedly shopping, when he noticed a commotion.

Brahim Abdessemed had just injured two parking attendants with a knife and was attempting to escape.

Loureiro, showing immense courage, tried to intervene and protect the police.

His bravery, however, came at the cost of his own life.

A Heartfelt Tribute to a Fallen Hero

After his tragic death, Lino Sousa Loureiro was remembered by his community in Mulhouse, including the local Portuguese cultural and folk group.

They shared heartfelt tributes on social media, mourning the loss of a “courageous compatriot” who sacrificed his life to protect others.

“His act of bravery will remain engraved in our memories,” they wrote, honoring his selfless actions.

Local and Political Tributes Pour In

The identity of the victim was confirmed by Portuguese politician Joao Soarez, who took to social media to express his condolences.

Soarez shared a photo of Loureiro and described the tragic event, offering sympathy to his family and friends.

He also highlighted that Loureiro lived just 500 meters from the site of the attack in Mulhouse.

The Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs also shared their condolences, acknowledging Loureiro’s bravery and sacrifice in his final moments.
