Assault on Judge During Court Sentencing
In a shocking incident at the Clark County District Court in Las Vegas, Judge Mary Kay Holthus became the victim of a violent attack by a criminal she was in the process of sentencing.
The assailant, Deobra Delone Redden, had just received a sentence for aggravated battery when the unexpected assault occurred on Wednesday morning.
Denial of Bail Triggers Attack
The confrontation unfolded when Judge Holthus denied bail to Redden during the sentencing hearing.
Video footage captured the moment Redden unexpectedly leaped from his position, rushing towards the judge’s bench to launch the assault. Amid the chaos, Redden audibly expressed hostility, stating, ‘nah f*** that b*tch.’
Brutal Attack Unfolds
As Redden threw himself at the judge, both the marshal and Judge Holthus attempted to evade the attack. However, Redden overpowered them, unleashing a vicious assault.
The footage reveals Redden repeatedly punching Judge Holthus and using explicit language while security officers intervened to subdue the assailant. Throughout the attack, the female judge can be heard pleading for mercy.
Irony in the Attack
Ironically, Redden’s assault occurred immediately after he was sentenced for aggravated battery with substantial bodily harm.
The attack resulted in injuries to Judge Holthus, whose condition is currently under close monitoring. The marshal also sustained injuries and required hospital transport following the brutal incident.
Response and Commitment to Safety
In response to the assault, the Las Vegas District Court issued a statement commending the heroic actions of court staff, law enforcement, and others involved in subduing the defendant.
The court reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining a safe and secure courthouse and courtrooms. Ongoing reviews of protocols are being conducted to ensure the protection of the judiciary, the public, and court employees.
Criminal History of the Assailant
Deobra Delone Redden has a criminal history with charges in both Nevada and Texas. The 30-year-old has faced charges including battery, robbery, assault, injury to property, and coercion.
Redden had previously undergone a competency determination, and despite prior concerns, he was deemed competent in October.
