Lagos Police Sergeant Dismissed for Extorting N98,000 from Citizen

…By Dorcas Funmi for TDPel Media. A police sergeant identified as Ekpo Shimuyere, stationed at the Sogunle Division, has been dismissed by the Lagos State Police Command for extorting N98,000 from a young man.

The dismissal follows an investigation by the command’s Provost Department, which led to the sergeant being disrobed.

Victim’s Complaint and Investigation:

The incident came to light when the victim lodged a complaint with the police, alleging that the dismissed sergeant had confiscated his phone and used a Point of Sale (POS) operator to transfer N98,000 from his bank account, out of the N100,000 available.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the officer initially denied the crime but was subsequently detained for investigation.

The command conducted an inquiry into the sergeant’s bank account to gather evidence.

Violation of Professional Ethics:

SP Benjamin Hundeyin emphasized that the sergeant’s actions were in direct violation of the ethical standards expected of law enforcement officers.

As a result, the officer was subjected to an orderly room trial in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

Evidence and Testimony:

During the investigation, the police command obtained the statement of account from the sergeant’s bank and traced the transferred money to the POS operator who facilitated the transaction.

The victim was invited to provide testimony, confirming the incident.

Additionally, the POS operator was summoned and stated that the sergeant had instructed him to transfer the funds from the victim’s account to another account.

Punishment and Dismissal:

Following a thorough review of the orderly room proceedings, Commissioner of Police Mr. Idowu Owohunwa of the Lagos Command approved the punishment of dismissal from the police force for the officer with Force No. 461654, who was attached to the Sogunle Police Division.
