Parts of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), the Free State as well as the Eastern Cape have received several weather warnings. The weather warnings are with regard to widespread thunderstorms, flash floods and strong winds.

The devastating rainfall which caused flooding in KZN claimed more than 400 lives and approximately 72 people, including children, are still unaccounted for. Venetia Phakula, a forecaster, said that Level 4 warnings had been issued for localised flooding and mudslides.

Concerns were raised for people residing in informal settlements. The South African Defence Force (SANDF) has been working to assist those impacted by the rainfall. Out of the 10 000 troops that were earmarked for KZN, less than 500 have been deployed to assist victims of the flood-ravaged province.

EWN reports that General Andres Mahapa stated that joint operations between military and civilian teams are on the ground. They are reportedly still recovering bodies from the debris, over a week after the flooding and heavy rainfall in KZN.

Wet and cold weather conditions in Gauteng this weekend

The weather forecast indicates that Gauteng residents should brace themselves for a third consecutive week of rain and cold temperatures. Last weekend, a level 4 rain warning was issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) and it had been pouring the week before that one.

According to the SA weather service, temperatures in Pretoria will be between 14 and 22 degrees Celsius this coming weekend while in Johannesburg, temperatures will be between 8 and 21 degrees Celsius.

Gauteng Public Transport and Road Infrastructure MEC Jacob Mamabolo sounded the alarm bells. He warned of flooded bridges and roads in low-lying areas.
