KwaZulu-Natal Social Development MEC, Nonhlanhla Khoza, has urged society to unite against the continued murder of women in the province

Nonhlanhla Khoza, the MEC for Social Development in KwaZulu-Natal, has encouraged people to band together to stop the ongoing murder of women in the region.

The community must speak up and separate anyone implicated in incidents of gender-based violence (GBV), according to Khoza.

Khoza made the call while Mthokozisi Nene, a police officer, was appearing in court for a brief hearing over the death of his wife.

Nene, 44, is accused of killing his wife Thobeka MaMsomi Nene following a fight two weeks ago at their house in Inchanga, west of Durban.

The two daughters of the dead, James Nxumalo, a member of the Provincial Legislature, and members of the community were among those who attended the court hearing on Monday.

Men should take the lead in all campaigns to stop the spread of GBV, according to the MEC.

Bail was rejected for Nene, and the case was continued to July 13, 2022.

Khoza praised the court for refusing to release Nene on bail, arguing that such individuals have to be held in detention while their charges are being heard in court.

“We appreciated that they gave this situation a lot of thought.

The murder was premeditated, as is evident. This situation, in which children lost their mother at the hands of their father, is heartbreaking “explained Khoza.

She continued by saying that it was inconceivable for anyone to consider killing their spouse, particularly one who was expected to support the family.

“The duty of a police officer is to serve and protect the community as well, but this one had no compassion.

He reportedly took matters into his own hands and killed an innocent woman in front of her children “MEC stated.

She voiced worry about Nene’s lack of remorse in court because he had not turned over the gun he is accused of using to kill his wife to the police.

“We are saddened by the loss of a teacher for our children, but our social workers will offer psychosocial support to the family, the deceased’s biological children, and the schoolchildren.

We appreciate how the neighborhood came together to protest this man’s bail. We’ll keep an eye on this situation till it’s resolved “She spoke.

Nxumalo pleaded with law enforcement organizations to use all of their resources to keep the person who committed this horrible act behind bars.

Nxumalo added that she wants men who perpetrate GBV to be held accountable and the death of women and children to be prevented, saying “He needs to face the full weight of the law.”
