Kate Lawler, the former Big Brother winner, has firmly responded to online trolls criticizing her body, insisting that she’s happy with her size.
At 44, the star has faced her fair share of body shaming, particularly after sharing bikini photos from her vacation last year.
Some critics suggested she was in a “calorie deficit” or even suffering from an eating disorder.
However, Lawler made it clear that she has no intention of letting the negative comments get to her.
Defending Her Body and Her Choices
During a candid conversation on the It Can’t Just Be Me podcast with Anna Richardson, Kate explained how trolls often accuse her of not eating despite being perfectly content with her physique.
“People say, ‘You can’t be eating,'” she shared, “but I am happy with the size I am. I do eat.”
She added that body-shaming can go both ways, with people criticizing others for being either too big or too small.
Lawler emphasized that it’s unnecessary to send abusive messages about someone’s body, no matter what shape or size they are.
A Double Standard on Social Media
Kate has faced comparisons to other public figures, including the late Big Brother contestant Nikki Grahame, who passed away in 2021 after a long battle with anorexia.
Some trolls even brought up Nikki’s struggles in relation to Kate’s physique, which Kate found not only insensitive but also unfair.
She believes there is a “double standard” on social media where plus-sized women are praised for showing off their curves, while those who are slimmer, like herself, are often criticized.
“Why can’t a real woman be a healthy size eight?” she questioned.
For context, Kate is 5ft 6in, weighs 8st 4lb, and has a BMI of 19.2, which falls within the healthy range according to NHS guidelines.
Dealing with Unwarranted Criticism
Kate was taken aback by the backlash after sharing her photos.
“Someone asked, ‘What message are you trying to send to young girls?'” she recalled, visibly annoyed.
“I wasn’t sending a message; I just posted a selfie.”
If she were to send a message, she clarified, it would be one of body positivity—encouraging young girls to eat a balanced diet, treat themselves well, and exercise.
Her husband, Martin Bojtos, also came to her defense, jokingly commenting on one of her Instagram posts: “I love that people are concerned about my wife’s weight when I cook for her.”
Focusing on the Positive
Despite the negativity, Kate admitted that she doesn’t let trolls dictate her actions.
She prefers to focus on the supportive members of her fanbase and those who are genuinely kind.
“I don’t want to respond to the trolls. I just want to focus on the people who are positive and caring,” she explained.
Kate’s Candid Confessions About Her Love Life
Away from the trolls, Kate has opened up about her past relationships.
Before settling down with Martin, she enjoyed a more carefree single life and was open about her love for casual sex.
“I loved being single and just having casual sex with people,” she shared, estimating that she’s been with over 50 people.
However, she also revealed that her love life had its share of challenges, including a toxic relationship that required a letter to end.
She described meeting Martin after coming out of this difficult relationship, saying that meeting him marked a turning point in her life.
Overcoming Relationship Struggles
Kate also shared some intimate details about her marriage, admitting that the couple faced struggles, especially when they became parents.
Her post-natal depression created significant communication issues, which led Martin to suggest couples therapy.
“Martin just wanted to start our marriage on the right foot,” she said, reflecting on how counseling helped them navigate their challenges.
Kate now sees the therapy as “invaluable,” and the couple continues to have sessions every few months.
Kate’s openness about her body, relationships, and mental health shows her resilience in the face of adversity, and she continues to prioritize her happiness and well-being over online criticism.
