Simon Cowell is a name that barely needs an introduction.
The 66-year-old music mogul has shaped the careers of countless artists through shows like The X Factor and the Got Talent franchise.
One person who knows him behind the scenes is singer-songwriter and producer Kamille, born Camille Angelina Purcell, who has been closely involved with Cowell’s projects for years.
From Finance to the Music World
Kamille didn’t start in the music industry.
She left her finance job to chase her passion for music, and her gamble paid off.
After penning the 2013 number one hit What About Us for The Saturdays, she hustled her way into the industry and eventually came into Simon Cowell’s orbit.
Over the years, she has written for big names including James Arthur, Susan Boyle, Little Mix, and more recently for Fred Again, Jess Glynne, Anne-Marie, and Kylie Minogue.
A Different Side of Simon
While Cowell is often seen as the tough, no-nonsense judge on television, Kamille paints a very different picture.
She first met him while working on The X Factor for three years, coaching behind the scenes, and says their working relationship blossomed into a genuine friendship.
“One thing I really loved was how Simon would genuinely want to hear my opinion, even over other execs in the room,” Kamille explained.
“He’d be like, ‘Camille, what do you think?’ and it was amazing to feel heard.
I just stuck with him because I was obsessed with everything he had to say.”
The Chaos and Fun on Set
Working with Simon on Netflix’s new docu-series Simon Cowell: The Next Act has given Kamille plenty of stories to tell.
She describes him as “troublesome,” “funny,” and “one of a kind.”
“It’s like going to work with that brother who’s always doing something random,” she laughed.
“He doesn’t even have a phone in the usual sense—sometimes I get random calls that just say, ‘Hi Kamille, it’s Simon.’
And then he just rocks up to work, and there’s a flood of people with him. It’s like a tornado has arrived, and he’s brilliant.”
Kamille adds that what makes him so special is not just his personality but his talent.
“He’s truly talented underneath it all.
He’s the goat—some of the ideas he has, like putting seven boys in a band, it’s genius. And it worked so well.”
Pride in the New Boyband
The new Netflix series follows Simon, his wife Lauren Silverman, and music industry professionals as they put together a new boyband.
Kamille shared her pride in seeing him push through doubts and challenges.
“There were moments where he thought it wouldn’t work.
One day at auditions, it felt like no one even turned up.
But he pushed through, and in the end, we found an incredible group of seven boys.
Auditions in London, Liverpool, and Dublin brought together this perfect band.”
Kamille’s Lasting Admiration
Kamille’s admiration for Cowell is clear.
She even recently sent him a song co-written with Ed Sheeran for the new band, which he reportedly listened to 100 times on the way to the premiere.
“Honestly, my experience with him—I owe him a lot.
He’s amazing, and I really can’t rave about him enough,” she said.
