Kaizer Chiefs’ sporting director, Kaizer Motaung Junior, has firmly rejected allegations that other PSL clubs are intentionally hindering the Soweto-based club’s business dealings.
Speaking to iDiski Times, Motaung emphasized the collaborative nature of the league and the mutual respect among its teams.
Respecting Negotiations and Business Interests
Motaung explained that all PSL clubs are partners in the league, and each team’s goal is to achieve its own objectives.
He noted that it’s common in the football industry for clubs to try and hold onto their top talent.
Referring to Kaizer Chiefs’ interest in signing players, he said, “If you were to ask me, if someone came to buy Shabalala, I would say no.”
He further stressed that negotiations are a natural part of business in football, acknowledging that clubs must engage respectfully to achieve their goals.
“We respect them and they respect us, and that’s how it works worldwide,” he said.
Kaizer Chiefs’ Failed Pursuits
The controversy surrounding the alleged obstruction came after Kaizer Chiefs’ failure to secure the signing of Cape Town Spurs’ Asenele Velebayi and Polokwane’s reluctance to sell Oswin Appollis.
However, as Motaung pointed out, such challenges are part of the negotiation process, and teams naturally try to hold onto their key players for as long as possible.
George Matlou’s Future at Kaizer Chiefs
In other club news, Kaizer Chiefs have informed midfielder George Matlou that his future at the club is uncertain.
Due to persistent injury issues, Matlou has been told that his contract extension will depend on his performance for the remainder of the season.
A source close to the club revealed, “The ball is in his court,” adding that the club has made it clear that Matlou must prove his worth by playing well in the remaining matches.
If he fails to do so, he could face the prospect of free agency when the season ends.
What’s Next for Matlou and the Club?
The club’s communication with Matlou about his contract extension shows that Kaizer Chiefs are giving him a chance to prove himself.
The next few months will determine whether Matlou can secure an extension or if he’ll be let go.
