On Sunday it was confirmed that Soweto giants Orlando Pirates will contest this season’s CAF Confederation Cup final. The Buccaneers are now just one victory away from their first piece of silverware this season after beating Libyan side Al Ahly Tripoli 2-1 on aggregate.
Orlando Pirates won the first leg of their semi-final 2-0 in Libya, but Tripoli won the second leg at the Orlando Stadium 1-0 on Sunday after scoring a late goal, although it was ultimately in vain.
Orlando Pirates will play the winner of the second semi-final between the DR Congo’s TP Mazembe and RS Berkane of Morocco.
Those two sides will battle in their semi-final second leg at 21:00 (SA time) on Sunday, with TP Mazembe holding a 1-0 advantage after the first leg.
Commenting on the progression of Pirates, Pitso Mosimane – who has just led Al Ahly to a third successive CAF Champions League final – sent a message of congratulations to Bucs, while highlighting that he had originally tipped them to reach the final.
“I want to congratulate my fellow South African team for making CAF Confederation Cup Final. When I conducted the CAF draw, I tipped them to make the final. Thank for making it true,” he stated on social media.
The highly-anticipated final will be held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Nigeria on Friday, 20 May.
The kick-off time is yet to be confirmed.
