Julian Alvarez has hinted at a potential exit from Manchester City this summer, revealing his frustration over not being a regular starter in the club’s biggest matches.
Despite being a key player and contributing significantly, the forward is contemplating his future after not securing a spot in any of the five major finals during his tenure at City.
Alvarez, who played the fifth-most minutes for City last season, has struggled to find a consistent starting role.
Although he has netted 36 goals over his two seasons with the team, he often finds himself playing second fiddle to Erling Haaland or taking on a more withdrawn role.
The Argentinian star’s frustration is evident as he reflects on his position within the squad.
Busy Summer for the Forward
This summer has been particularly hectic for Alvarez.
After helping Argentina secure the Copa America title, he’s now representing his country in the Olympics. Despite his busy schedule, he has taken time to express his feelings about his current situation.
“Last season, I was among the players with the most minutes at City, but not being involved in crucial matches is tough.
You want to be part of those moments and make a difference,” Alvarez shared. He added, “I’ll take some time to decide what’s best for me. We’ll see where things go.”
Future Plans Uncertain
For now, Alvarez remains focused on the Olympics, knowing it’s a short-term commitment. He mentioned that after the Games, he plans to take a brief break before making any decisions about his future.
“At Manchester City, I feel good and have played a lot, but we’ll assess things after the tournament,” he said.
City’s Perspective
Manchester City acquired Alvarez from River Plate in January 2022 for £14 million, though he was loaned back to his former club for half of that season.
Over the past two years, he has proven to be an integral part of Pep Guardiola’s squad. In his debut season, he was the team’s second-top scorer, and last year, he signed a lucrative contract extending to 2028.
Guardiola has commented on Alvarez’s situation, stating, “I’m aware he’s thinking about his future. Once he’s made his decision, his agent will discuss it with Txiki [Begiristain], and we’ll see what happens next.”
Guardiola acknowledged that while Alvarez desires to play in important games, many players share that ambition. “We have numerous players who want to be in those key moments,” he added.
As Alvarez ponders his next move, both he and City await the outcomes of his reflections and the subsequent decisions.
