In a heated exchange on MSNBC, Joy Reid made a bold statement about the Republican Party’s loyalty to Donald Trump, claiming that the party would support him even if he were to sell the United States to Russia.
The comment came during an interview on Thursday night when Reid questioned Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).
Reid didn’t hold back, saying, “If Donald Trump announced tomorrow that he was selling the United States to Vladimir Putin personally and that we will now be owned by the Kremlin, every single Republican would say, ‘Yes, sir,’ and vote for it.”
She added, “We already have seen their behavior,” referring to Trump’s recent executive orders.
According to Reid, many Americans have already stopped expecting a different response from the GOP.
Trump’s Recent Remarks on Russia
Earlier on the same day, Donald Trump spoke about his recent conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump described the call as “lengthy and highly productive” in relation to finding a solution for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
He also made headlines when he stated that it was “unlikely” Ukraine would regain any territory lost to Russia in the past three years.
The comment came amid discussions about how Senate Republicans had successfully pushed through their budget resolution, marking an early step toward advancing Trump’s domestic policy agenda.
The Response from Democrats and Media
Reid’s comments follow growing concern from Democrats and many in the mainstream media about Trump’s approach to handling the war in Ukraine.
Critics have raised eyebrows at Trump’s recent “peace” talks with Putin, with some accusing him of trying to pressure Ukraine into an unfavorable resolution.
Trump’s willingness to engage with the Russian president has sparked a wide range of reactions both in the U.S. and abroad.
Trump’s potential success in helping to end the war in Ukraine would be a historic achievement, likely one of his first significant wins if he were to return to office.
However, his trust in Putin, coupled with his statements about the war, continues to stir controversy.
Trump Trusts Putin, but Global Leaders are Skeptical
During the same discussions, Trump reiterated that he trusted Putin’s desire for peace in Ukraine.
“I believe President Putin when I spoke to him yesterday.
I know him very well. I think he wants peace,” Trump stated.
This has drawn criticism, particularly from European allies, who have expressed concerns that Trump may be giving away too many concessions ahead of any peace talks, potentially at Ukraine’s expense.
Trump even suggested that he would “love” to have Russia reinstated in the G7, a group of leading economic powers that expelled Russia following its annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.
This has further fueled skepticism regarding Trump’s approach to dealing with Russia.
Ukrainian President Zelensky Responds to Trump’s Actions
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has been at the forefront of the fight against Russian aggression, expressed his displeasure over Trump’s direct conversation with Putin.
Zelensky stated it was “not very pleasant” that Trump spoke to Putin without consulting him first.
The Ukrainian president emphasized that after nearly three years of conflict, he would prefer to have a discussion with both leaders together.
Zelensky, who is scheduled to meet with U.S. Vice President JD Vance in Munich, has stated his goal to work on a “plan to stop Putin” alongside the U.S. leadership.
The ongoing tension between Trump’s public statements and Zelensky’s priorities underscores the deep complexities surrounding the war and international diplomacy.
