Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune, has addressed backlash from fans after being spotted at an Orlando Pirates game this past weekend.
Khune, who had a long and storied career at Chiefs, found himself in hot water after attending the Soweto Derby rivals’ match.
Khune and Wife Attend Pirates Game, Fans Accuse Him of Betrayal
Itumeleng and his wife, Sphelele, were seen at the Soweto Stadium watching Orlando Pirates take on Baroka, with the Buccaneers securing a 3-1 victory.
Fans quickly took to social media, accusing Khune of supporting Pirates, the biggest rivals of his former team, Kaizer Chiefs.
In an Instagram post, the couple shared pictures from their outing.
They were both dressed in black, which some interpreted as showing support for Pirates.
The former Chiefs captain was promptly criticized by his followers, with some even calling him a “traitor.”
Khune Responds to Allegations of Betrayal
Khune, who is known for his sense of humor, was quick to clarify the situation.
He explained that he was at the game for “work” purposes and not out of support for Pirates.
When asked by fans if he was now backing the Buccaneers, he firmly responded, “Amakhosi for life,” reaffirming his loyalty to his old club.
Khune also laughed off the accusations of being a “traitor” and even teased that some fans thought he was “confused.” His wife, Sphelele, joined in, laughing off the comments as well.
She proudly declared herself a “KC Girl,” but admitted that she appreciated the good football played by the Pirates.
Khune’s New Career Path After Kaizer Chiefs
While fans might be divided on Khune’s attendance at the Pirates match, the goalkeeper has moved on from his Kaizer Chiefs career.
Khune, now 37 years old, shared glimpses of his life after football on his Instagram.
In addition to working as a health and safety officer, he also holds shares in a sports betting company.
Khune’s exit from Kaizer Chiefs came after his contract for the 2024/2025 season wasn’t renewed.
After spending two decades with the club, including time in the youth academy, Khune’s departure was a significant moment for the Chiefs fanbase.
A month before his exit, the club honored him for his 25 years of service.
