Hawks make a breakthrough in theft of millions worth of jewelry from a warehouse owned by billionaire Johann Rupert

The Hawks have achieved a breakthrough in the theft of millions of dollars’ worth of jewels from a Johann Rupert warehouse by apprehending a guy in Soweto three years after the crime was committed.

Items worth an incredible R300 million were stolen from a facility in Rivonia, north of Johannesburg, in 2019, prompting the opening of a robbery investigation. The building is in charge of distributing expensive Richemont jewels all over the world. In the heist, security doors were totally damaged, personnel were bound, and guards were thoroughly overwhelmed. Additionally, it was said that the on-site CCTV appeared to “not be functioning at the time of the event.”

The Hawks said in a statement that they followed up on information that brought them to Soweto, where they found and detained Mduduzi Nxumalo, 39, on Monday. Due to his suspected involvement in the heist at Johann Rupert’s warehouse, he was charged with commercial robbery and made an appearance in the Randburg magistrate’s court on Tuesday.

On August 1st, 2022, he goes back to the pier.

“It is alleged that on the night of August 9, 2019, armed individuals drove into the business complex on Ballyclare Drive in Sandton, tied the security guards up with wires, and broke into a jewelry warehouse.”
