After a challenging season, Manchester United ended on a high note by clinching the FA Cup. It wasn’t all smooth sailing, though, as the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag was intense throughout the year.
Harry Maguire reflects on how the speculation surrounding Ten Hag’s future took a toll on the team. Despite this, Maguire is relieved that Ineos, the new co-owners, decided to stick with Ten Hag.
The uncertainty about his job status was palpable among the players, especially after the FA Cup victory over Manchester City in May.
Although Ineos interviewed several candidates, they ultimately extended Ten Hag’s contract for another year.
Handling the Uncertainty
Maguire described the situation as difficult, noting that the speculation leading up to the Cup Final was unsettling.
“It was tough,” he admitted. “Some of the things that came out were really poor, but Ten Hag handled it brilliantly.
He just took it day by day.” He commended Ten Hag for maintaining his composure despite the surrounding uncertainty and praised his performance in the Cup Final, which demonstrated the team’s capability to excel against top opponents.
A Strange Celebration
The celebration of the FA Cup win at the Marriott hotel in Mayfair felt odd for Maguire and the team.
“It was so strange,” he said. “No one knew what was going on or had any assurances about the future. But that’s typical at Manchester United; there’s always speculation about players and staff.”
Positive Outlook Despite Challenges
Maguire expressed satisfaction with Ten Hag staying on, especially after the manager had stripped him of the captaincy the previous year. “We have a good relationship and a lot of respect for each other,” Maguire said.
He acknowledged that the last season was tough for Ten Hag, marked by injuries and inconsistent performances.
However, he’s optimistic about the upcoming season and believes the team has the potential to bounce back.
Exciting Changes Ahead
Maguire also welcomed the recent changes within the club’s management, including the appointments of Omar Berrada as chief executive, Dan Ashworth as sporting director, and Jason Wilcox as technical director.
“It’s an exciting time for everyone involved with the club,” he noted. “The new structure and energy are promising, and I believe we’re heading in the right direction. This pre-season feels different, and there’s a renewed sense of optimism.”
The future looks bright for Manchester United as they move forward with a more stable and energized approach.
