In a resurfaced interview from 2018, Guy Pearce, known for his roles in Memento and L.A. Confidential, opened up about his challenging experience working with Kevin Spacey.
While Pearce has previously spoken out against Spacey, who is facing a civil sexual abuse claim, this conversation sheds more light on the tense dynamic between the two actors during the making of the 1997 film.
Pearce’s Experience with Spacey on Set
In the 2018 interview with Andrew Denton, Pearce shared how difficult it was for him to talk about his time working with Spacey.
The actor revealed that Spacey had been “handsy,” and described their interactions as uncomfortable.
Pearce admitted he found it tough to express his feelings, acknowledging Spacey’s remarkable talent but also noting his “slightly difficult” behavior.
“He’s a handsy guy,” Pearce said during the interview.
Despite the difficulty of discussing it, Pearce remained candid about his uncomfortable experience, making it clear that he wasn’t entirely at ease working alongside Spacey.
Pearce’s Fear of Spacey
Over the years, Pearce has maintained a negative view of Spacey, particularly following the allegations against him that surfaced in 2017.
Reflecting on his time working with the actor, Pearce admitted that he was “scared” of Spacey due to his aggressive and charismatic nature.
Pearce recalled feeling vulnerable as a young actor on set, particularly when Spacey’s attention would shift to his fellow co-star, Simon Baker.
“I was young and susceptible,” Pearce shared. “I felt more comfortable around him [Spacey] when Denny [Simon Baker] was on set.”
Spacey Responds to Pearce’s Comments
In response to Pearce’s more recent comments, Kevin Spacey shared a video on social media in which he refuted Pearce’s claims, accusing him of wanting to keep the “victim narrative” alive.
Spacey questioned why Pearce hadn’t mentioned the fact that he had visited Space while he was filming Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, a year after they worked together on L.A. Confidential.
Spacey’s response was sharp, telling Pearce to “grow up” and insinuating that Pearce’s portrayal of their relationship was misleading.
Spacey’s Legal Battles Continue
Meanwhile, Spacey’s legal issues continue to unfold. In 2023, he was cleared of sexual assault charges related to his time as artistic director at the Old Vic Theatre in London.
However, Spacey is once again facing legal action, this time from Ruari Cannon, who is suing Spacey for sexual abuse.
Cannon’s lawsuit, filed in the High Court, comes 18 months after Spacey was acquitted of several criminal charges related to sexual offences.
Details of Cannon’s claims have yet to be disclosed, but Spacey’s past continues to haunt him as the actor denies all allegations of inappropriate behavior or criminal wrongdoing.
Spacey’s Statement on Responsibility
In an interview with former GB News presenter Dan Wootton, Spacey addressed the ongoing allegations, acknowledging his past mistakes while denying any accusations of fabricated stories.
“I take full responsibility for my past behavior and my actions,” Spacey said, “but I cannot and will not take responsibility or apologize to anyone who’s made up stuff about me.”
As the legal cases continue, the complicated history between Guy Pearce and Kevin Spacey remains a focal point, with Pearce reflecting on his difficult experiences while Spacey maintains his innocence.
