Guardiola Apologizes for Letting Jesús Navas Depart Manchester City After Four Successful Years and Reflects on the Spanish Star’s Legacy

This season has been a tough one for Pep Guardiola, who’s found himself facing challenges unlike any in his illustrious managerial career.

Known for his near-perfect track record, even Guardiola isn’t immune to making mistakes.

Recently, he opened up about one decision he wishes he could take back, and it centers around a player he let go too soon.

The Regret Over a Departed Star

While many might think Guardiola was referring to the sale of Cole Palmer to Chelsea for £42.5 million in September last year, that wasn’t the case.

Palmer has since made a strong impact at Chelsea, with 34 goals and 17 assists in 52 Premier League appearances.

However, the player Guardiola regrets parting with is Jesús Navas, who left Manchester City after the 2016-17 season.

Navas’ Departure and Legacy

Navas had been with City since 2013, making 183 appearances across all competitions.

At the end of Guardiola’s first season, he decided to leave and return to Sevilla on a free transfer.

There, he spent another seven and a half seasons, adding more silverware to his collection.

Navas officially ended his playing career on New Year’s Eve, when his contract with Sevilla expired, but he will stay at the club in a non-playing role.

Guardiola’s Message to Navas

Sevilla recently held a special ceremony to honor Navas’ incredible career, and Guardiola took the opportunity to reach out to his former player.

Expressing his regret, Guardiola said, “Thank you for the gift of having spent a year together.

You don’t know how much I regret letting you go.

I would have loved for you to stay longer here, but sometimes you make mistakes.”

He continued, “Congratulations to all Sevillistas for having had such an extraordinary player and a person who defines Sevillismo.

For many years to come, Sevillistas, don’t let him slip away. Keep him close and with all of you. Farewell.”

Navas’ Impressive Career

During his four years at Manchester City, Navas helped the team win one Premier League title and two EFL Cups.

His time at Sevilla was equally successful, where he lifted eight trophies, including four UEFA Cup/Europa League titles.

On the international stage, Navas won the World Cup in 2010, the European Championship in 2012 and 2024, and the UEFA Nations League in 2022-23.

Guardiola’s heartfelt words show just how much he values the impact Navas had both as a player and a person during their time together.
