Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos State, has called for an investigation into the fatal Mile 2-Ibeshe boat accident on July 8. He expresses sympathy to the families of the deceased and is extremely grieved by the situation.

The unfortunate situation is being treated as criminal by the authorities, who are looking into what went wrong. The allegedly unlicensed boat clearly violated the “no night travel” and “no overloading” waterways regulations. In addition, not every passenger was wearing a life jacket, and the boat did not leave from a jetty that had been allowed by the authorities.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), and other organisations are supporting the investigation.

To guarantee that there are no more tragedies like this one in the future, anybody who is found to have contributed in any way to this disaster will unquestionably be prosecuted. The Sanwo-Olu government places the highest priority on human life; thus, the waterways laws and regulations must be observed.
