South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana said the suspects entered a Post Office in Gonubie, East London at approximately 10:00.

“It is further alleged that the men attempted to have access beyond the security gate, but a security guard on site refused them access. This is when he was fatally shot,” said Kinana.

The suspects stole the deceased’s firearm before fleeing the scene in a blue Suzuki Expresso.

The getaway vehicle was found abandoned, moments later, in Sandy Springs, said police.

A plastic bag containing the uniforms the suspects wore was found in the vehicle.

“Police are urging anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact the nearest police station. The information may also be shared via Crime Stop on 08600-10111,” said Kinana.

In an unrelated incident, four peole were wounded in a shootout between armed robbers and the police in Eerste River, Cape Town on Tuesday.

The suspects also attempted to rob a post office. Three suspects have been apprehended thus far in connection with the incident.

The injured victims were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
