Gavin Hunt, the head coach of SuperSport United, has recently addressed the swirling transfer rumors about Zakhele Lepasa potentially joining his team for the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.

Lepasa’s Declining Status at Orlando Pirates

Zakhele Lepasa seems to be losing his footing at Orlando Pirates, especially after struggling to secure a spot in the starting lineup towards the end of the previous season.

The Bafana Bafana international had an impressive start to the campaign, netting 10 goals in the first round.

However, his fortunes have changed under coach Jose Riveiro, who has favored Evidence Makgopa and Tshegofatso over Lepasa in the striking role.

Mabasa’s Impact and Team Changes

In January 2024, Lepasa’s former teammate, Mabasa, returned from a loan spell with Moroka Swallows.

Mabasa quickly showcased his goal-scoring prowess, contributing significantly to Pirates’ success in the 2024 Nedbank Cup and helping them finish as runners-up in the league behind Mamelodi Sundowns.

Hunt’s Striker Search

With the transfer window nearing its close, Hunt has openly acknowledged SuperSport United’s urgent need for a striker.

The team has been hit hard by injuries and departures, notably losing key player Bradley Grobler for five months and Etiosa Ighodaro, who has moved to AmaZulu FC on loan.

“We definitely need strikers,” Hunt said, referring to the ongoing media speculation about Lepasa’s possible transfer.

“With Ighodaro and Bradley out, we’re missing 20 goals.

Finding a replacement is crucial, but work permit issues complicate things.

It would be better if everyone received work permits simultaneously, like in Europe.”

Lepasa’s Current Situation

As for Lepasa, despite his previous loan stint with SuperSport United during the 2022/23 season, he has yet to make an appearance for Pirates in their five games this season, including fixtures in the CAF Champions League and MTN8.

What’s next for Lepasa and SuperSport United? Stay tuned for more updates as the transfer window wraps up.
