Gary Player came THIS close to a hole-in-one at Masters Par-3 Contest

Playing in the Masters Par-3 Contest, Player came within inches of a hole-in-one at the fifth hole.

Gary Player is a three-time Masters champion having triumphed in 1961, 1974 and 1978.

He, along with good friends Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, will perform honorary starter duties at this year’s tournament where they will each hit ceremonial tee shots down the first fairway (hopefully) at 13:50 (SA time) on Thursday, 7 April.

The Par-3 Contest, which was first held in 1960, was sadly called off on Wednesday due to inclement weather. It was making its return for the first time since 2019 after being cancelled the previous two years due to Covid-19 restrictions.

There was one ace at the Par-3 Contest

Canadian duo Mike Weir and Mackenzie Hughes were the clubhouse leaders at four-under par 23 when the siren sounded.

No Par-3 Contest winner has ever gone on to win the Masters that same year.

Before play was called off on Wednesday, there was time for one perfect fluke, thanks to American Jason Kokrak.
