Former Orlando Pirates Star Siyabonga Sangweni Urges Nkosinathi Sibisi to Enhance Communication and Leadership in Defensive Role at Pirates

Siyabonga Sangweni, a respected Orlando Pirates legend, has shared his thoughts on how Nkosinathi Sibisi can elevate his performance as a centre-back.

Having spent years playing in the same position for the Pirates, Sangweni understands the intricacies of the role and believes there are key areas where Sibisi can improve.

Focus on Composure and Decision-Making

Sangweni, who formed a solid defensive partnership with Lucky Lekgwathi at the club, believes that Sibisi’s tendency to rush into tackles can sometimes lead to avoidable fouls.

According to Sangweni, a more measured approach is essential for maintaining defensive stability.

He encourages Sibisi to focus on guiding attackers instead of trying to win the ball too quickly.

“I’m glad to see the boy representing us from KZN,” Sangweni commented in a recent interview with FARPost.

“But one area he needs to work on is his composure when defending. He should try not to rush into tackles, which often results in fouls.

Sometimes, it’s about guiding the attacker rather than throwing your leg out there. Communication on the field is also critical.”

Strength in Partnerships and Communication

Sangweni also highlighted the importance of Sibisi’s partnership with fellow defender Olisa Ndah, who is known for his ability to organize the defensive line and communicate effectively with his teammates.

Sangweni believes that this partnership brings out Sibisi’s best performances, as the two work together to cover defensive gaps.

“You can see how solid their pairing is when Sibisi plays with Ndah,” Sangweni added.

“Ndah is a strong communicator, and that’s important for organizing the defense. But Sibisi is now experienced enough to take on more responsibility.

As a leader, he must step up and know when it’s necessary to commit a foul, not just react to situations.”

Leadership and Responsibility at the Back

Sangweni went on to emphasize the leadership qualities Sibisi must embrace to ensure defensive cohesion.

He believes that Sibisi must take charge of the defense and understand the dynamics of when to press and when to cover.

Proper communication between defenders is key, especially when one player moves forward or engages with an attacker.

“At the back, it’s about understanding each other,” Sangweni explained.

“When one defender commits, the other must cover. This understanding should start in training.

You have to know that if someone steps up to challenge the ball, someone else must be there to cover the space. It’s important not to leave the middle open.”

Central Attacks vs. Wide Play

Finally, Sangweni expressed his concern about allowing attacks to come through the central areas, which he believes are more dangerous than those originating from the wings.

While crosses can present challenges, he argued, central attacks are more damaging and harder to defend.

“We’d rather be beaten by a cross than through the middle,” Sangweni stated.

“When teams break through central areas, that’s when we have to ask questions of ourselves. It’s crucial not to leave those gaps open.”
