Former NFL quarterback Bernie Kosar shared a sobering health update this week, revealing that he is undergoing a third surgery in just a few days.
The 61-year-old, who is battling liver failure and Parkinson’s disease, had hoped to receive a donor liver over the weekend—but complications arose when the organ was found to be infected.
Following this, Kosar suffered internal bleeding on Monday, prompting two “aggressive procedures” before preparing for yet another operation on Wednesday.
In a heartfelt Facebook video, he asked fans for their support:
“Man, all the duress right now, I could really use your love, support and actual prayers today.”
A Battle With Cirrhosis and Parkinson’s
Kosar first revealed his serious health challenges in July 2024 to Cleveland Magazine, disclosing a cirrhosis diagnosis and early-stage Parkinson’s disease.
He recounted a frightening moment at a Browns game against the Jets in December 2023 when his body “gave out,” saying:
“I really felt like I wasn’t going to make it home from the Jets game.
I sucked it up, though, and continued to avoid the doctors until the new year.
Then I went into the hospital and got a massive blood transfusion.”
Doctors were shocked at his condition, noting extremely low hemoglobin levels that made his survival uncertain.
Long-Term Effects From a Storied NFL Career
Kosar spent nine years with the Cleveland Browns, followed by stints with the Dolphins and Cowboys, amassing decades of football experience—but also a heavy toll on his body.
He estimates he suffered around 100 concussions and 80 broken bones during his career, leading to ongoing health complications.
Over the summer, News 5 Cleveland reported that Kosar has been on the liver transplant list for over a year.
While grateful for the prospect of a new liver, he has expressed complex emotions about receiving an organ from a donor, saying the experience is “spiritually conflicting.”
Living With Constant Medical Interventions
Kosar has also required frequent surgeries to manage fluid buildup in his blood, sometimes needing procedures every couple of days.
Despite years of liver-related issues, he had initially dismissed the symptoms without knowing the underlying cause.
Even after retiring from professional football in 1996, Kosar has remained a visible figure in the sport, attending Super Bowl events and other high-profile gatherings.
He even appeared alongside pop star Taylor Swift two years ago at a pre-game event hosted by Travis Kelce.
A Call for Support
As Kosar navigates this challenging period of his life, his message to fans is clear: he values their thoughts, prayers, and encouragement.
The former NFL star faces a difficult road ahead, but his resilience both on and off the field remains evident.
“All the duress right now, I could really use your love, support and actual prayers today,” he reminded followers, highlighting the human side of a legend whose body has carried the scars of decades of football battles.
