Former Argentinian FA manager Omar Souto passes away at 73 after shaping the careers of national football stars

The world of football is in mourning after the news broke that Omar Souto, former manager and long-time stalwart of the Argentinian Football Association (AFA), has passed away at the age of 73.

His death was announced by the AFA on Sunday, bringing an outpouring of grief from colleagues, players, and fans alike.

A Career Devoted to Argentine Football

Souto devoted more than three decades of his life to the AFA, shaping generations of players and leaving a lasting mark on Argentine football.

Just last month, he was celebrated at an awards ceremony, receiving heartfelt recognition for his dedication and contributions.

The AFA’s tribute highlighted his loyalty and inspiration:

“Simply thank you, Omar. Thank you for your solidarity, your unparalleled commitment to the Albiceleste and for being a true role model.”

The Man Who Brought Messi Home

Omar Souto is perhaps best remembered for his pivotal role in bringing Lionel Messi into the fold of the Argentine national team.

As a teenager at Barcelona, Messi had the option to represent Spain, but it was Souto who first reached out to the young talent about representing his country of birth.

In a 2021 interview with TyC Sports, Souto recalled the lengths he went to contact Messi:

“I thought his name was Leonardo because everyone called him Leo.

I went to a phone booth in Monte Grande, got a directory of Rosario, called his grandmother, then his uncle, and finally his father.

When I spoke to him, he said, ‘Finally, you’re going to call him up.

My son wants to play for the Argentine National Team.'”

Thanks to Souto’s persistence, Messi went on to make 196 appearances for Argentina, scoring 116 goals, and lifting both the FIFA World Cup and Copa America trophies.

Fond Memories and Tributes from Messi

Following news of Souto’s passing, Lionel Messi shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, posting a photo of them together with the 2022 World Cup trophy. Messi wrote:

“You were always there and were the person who paved the way for the AFA to take notice of me.

An incredible human being, impossible to forget for all of us who had the privilege of being with the national team.

We will never forget you, Omar. Rest in peace.”

A Legacy That Lives On

Omar Souto’s contributions to Argentine football extend far beyond one player.

He helped shape the careers of countless national team stars, offering guidance, support, and opportunities that might otherwise never have existed. His dedication to the Albiceleste will be remembered by fans, players, and colleagues for years to come.
