Government’s Response to Impending Nationwide Strike
In response to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) announcing their intention to embark on a nationwide indefinite strike starting October 3, the Ministry of Labour and Productivity, led by Simon Lalong, has initiated measures to avert the impending industrial action.
This move comes after the organized Labour Unions expressed dissatisfaction with the Federal Government’s failure to implement policies aimed at alleviating the hardships faced by Nigerians.
Labour Unions’ Demands
The organised labour unions had put forth a series of demands to the Federal Government, particularly in the aftermath of the removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
These demands encompassed various aspects, including wage awards, the implementation of palliatives, tax exemptions and allowances for public sector workers, and a comprehensive review of the minimum wage.
Government’s Commitment to Resolution
In response to the strike announcement, Olajide Oshundun, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Labour, emphasized the government’s commitment to engaging with the union to prevent the strike.
He emphasized that the current state of the country’s economy is too fragile to withstand a nationwide shutdown.
Oshundun also noted that President Bola Tinubu’s forthcoming Independence Day speech on October 1 is expected to unveil a palliative package aimed at addressing the concerns of workers.
Working Towards Resolution
Furthermore, Oshundun revealed that the Labour Ministry is actively working on addressing the specific demands put forward by the NLC and TUC, with a particular focus on wage awards.
He expressed confidence in averting the strike and assured that the government is dedicated to finding viable solutions to the issues raised by the labour unions.
Additionally, he mentioned that the ministry has made progress in securing the release of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) factional chairman, demonstrating the government’s commitment to dialogue and resolution.
