South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said Nkosenhle’s body was found after his father investigated “a bad smell coming from behind the toilet.”
“On investigation, he noticed a big stone which he removed and discovered the body of his son,” said Mbele.
The Empangeni SAPS have opened an inquest docket.
The toddler was reported missing earlier this month. He was last seen playing with another child in the Bomvini area at approximately 14:00 on 20 March, said the police in an earlier statement.
A search was conducted after his disappearance but the two-year-old was nowhere to be found.
“He was last seen wearing a red shorts, a vest with blue and white stripes and navy flip flops,” said the police spokesperson at the time.
