FAO praises Cuba’s agri-food system transformations

HAVANA, 30th March, 2022 – Transformations in Cuba’s agri-food systems were praised by Marcelo Resende, FAO representative in Cuba, in accordance with the strategy of making them more efficient, sustainable, inclusive and resilient.

In statements to the press, Resende meant such guidelines are in accordance with the ones passed of the 37th Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Prensa Latina News Agency quoted Resende as stating that due to priority and attention of these changes by the country’s authorities, the Cuban Agriculture Minister Idael Pérez will speak on Wednesday at the 37th Regional Conference about what is being done to improve production, nutrition, environment and quality of life in terms of food and nutritional security and sovereignty.

In this regard, FAO representative in Cuba highlighted the approved programmes for decentralising agricultural policies and plans for a more horizontal and less vertical agriculture.

The FAO representative specified that the 37th Regional Conference will take place at a too delicate moment for agri-food systems in Latin America and the Caribbean, worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, and now by the Ukraine conflict, with serious consequences for trade and supply of wheat, gas, fertilizers and other raw materials.
