eThekwini Municipality Implements Fishing and Recreational Activity Ban in Response to Sewage Contamination Near Umngeni Estuary and Blue Lagoon

In response to a sewage spill near the Umngeni River mouth, the eThekwini Municipality has implemented a ban on fishing and recreational activities stretching from the Umngeni Estuary to the Blue Lagoon non-bathing beach.

The quick action comes after authorities were alerted to significant contamination, prompting the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment (DFFE) to issue a Coastal Compliance Notice.

Investigation Underway and Infrastructure Repairs Planned

The municipality has confirmed that its teams are currently investigating the source of the sewage discharge.

Once the inquiry is concluded, plans will be put in place to repair the damaged infrastructure.

The directive issued by DFFE aligns with the National Environmental Management: Integrated Coastal Management Act no. 24 of 2008, as explained in a statement released on Wednesday.

Vandalism and Theft Contributing to Rising Pollution

Officials have pointed to ongoing vandalism and theft that affect the city’s sewer infrastructure as significant contributors to the contamination.

Illegal connections to the sewer system and the damage to infrastructure have worsened the pollution, leading to higher E. coli levels in local waterways.

“The city is working tirelessly to address all infrastructural issues that may pose environmental risks,” said the municipality.

“We urge residents to report any vandalism or theft of infrastructure to the police so that those responsible can be held accountable.”

Fishing Ban to Stay in Place Until Investigation and Repairs are Complete

The municipality has urged fishermen and the public to adhere to the fishing ban in the affected areas.

This restriction will remain until the investigation is finished, and repairs to the sewer infrastructure are complete.

In the meantime, the municipality continues to emphasize the importance of community cooperation in addressing the ongoing issues and minimizing ecological harm.

Can eThekwini Overcome Its Sewage Crisis?

With the investigation ongoing and repairs expected, many are left wondering if eThekwini can resolve its sewage crisis and return the affected areas to their natural state.

The public is encouraged to stay informed by following updates from local authorities.
