Eric Stonestreet shares how he turned his life around with weight loss and diabetes treatment while living in Los Angeles

You probably know Eric Stonestreet best as the lovable and hilarious Cameron Tucker from Modern Family.

But behind the laughs and red-carpet appearances, the Emmy-winning actor has been quietly dealing with a serious health issue for years—one he kept private for a long time.

Now, at 53, Eric is stepping into the spotlight for a different reason.

He’s sharing his deeply personal journey with diabetes and weight loss, opening up about the medication that helped him get on track, and how it’s transformed his life—and even brought him closer to his mom.

Teaming Up With Mom for a New Chapter

Eric recently appeared in a new campaign for Mounjaro, a GLP-1 medication used for weight loss and managing type 2 diabetes.

What makes this one special?

He stars in it alongside his mom, Jamey.

In a joint Instagram post, the two shared their experiences:

“My mom Jamey and I are proud to share our success stories with Mounjaro. We hope to inspire others to talk to their doctors to get the treatment they need.”

Their goal? To help others take that first step—especially those who might be scared or unsure about managing their health.

A Diagnosis He Kept Hidden

Eric was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2009, right around the time Modern Family became a hit.

But instead of celebrating his new career high, he was quietly struggling with his diagnosis—and chose not to tell anyone.

“I was embarrassed. I didn’t want to tell anybody,” he shared with People.

“I didn’t even tell my parents, who were both type 2 diabetics. I didn’t tell my best friends. I didn’t even tell people I was dating.”

He said the news hit him like a weight—but not in a way that pushed him into action.

At the time, he got a few pills from a doctor and little more.

No pep talk.

No real plan.

Just a “Take care” and off you go.

Keeping Secrets From the One He Loved

Even after meeting his now-fiancée, Lindsay Schweitzer, Eric admits he kept his health issues a secret at first.

He’d hide his medications, even his injectables, afraid of what she might think.

Eventually, though, he realized he couldn’t continue down the same path.

After finding a supportive team of doctors, things began to shift.

And it wasn’t just about numbers on a scale—it was about preventing the same pain he watched his own father go through.

A Turning Point With Family in Mind

Eric’s father had suffered intensely from diabetic neuropathy before passing away from leukemia.

That pain stuck with Eric.

“That was the most painful thing for him,” he said. “I just decided—I can’t go down that road.”

He also began thinking about the future he wanted—not just for himself, but for the twin boys he helps raise with his fiancée.

“They’re her kids, but I’ve known them since they were three. They’re my kids. And like every parent, I want to be around for them.”

A Game-Changer Named Mounjaro

Everything started to change when Eric began taking weekly Mounjaro injections in May 2022.

Not only did the medication help manage his diabetes, but it jumpstarted a bigger lifestyle shift.

“It’s a game changer,” he said. “It’s changed my lifestyle, my approach to eating, to exercise.”

And unlike past attempts, this time, Eric was all in.

“I felt like—if I don’t contribute something too, I’m letting it down. This drug is doing its part, so now I have to do mine.”

That mindset paid off.

With the help of Mounjaro, better food choices, and more movement, Eric finally saw results.

His mom, too, lost a significant amount of weight on the same journey.

Feeling Lighter—In Body and Spirit

Eric doesn’t just talk about numbers on a scale.

He talks about how it feels—like having a new bounce in his step.

“I’m just lighter on my feet. It feels good. Walking through the airport with luggage, I can feel the difference.”

He said he stayed around the same weight for years, but over the past year, with real commitment, he’s dropped a substantial amount—and feels more energetic than he has in a long time.

What’s Next?

Now that he’s speaking out, Eric’s message is simple: take your health seriously, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Whether it’s a loved one, a doctor, or a community going through the same thing—you’re not alone.

He’s hoping his honesty encourages others to do what he finally did: stop hiding, start healing, and make lasting changes that go far beyond the mirror.
