Emergency services contain fire as blaze spreads from grass to storage crates at South African Breweries in Soweto

A tense scene unfolded near South Gate, Soweto, as flames engulfed part of the South African Breweries (SAB) facility on Wednesday.

What started as a simple grass fire quickly turned into a serious situation, prompting swift action from emergency crews.

From Grassfire to Crate Inferno

According to Johannesburg Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spokesperson Xolile Khumalo, the incident began when dry grass in a nearby open field caught alight.

Unfortunately, the flames didn’t stop there—they spread rapidly, reaching storage crates inside the SAB premises and setting them ablaze.

The fire’s proximity to the brewery sparked immediate concern, not only due to the facility’s significance but also because of the potential risk to workers and surrounding structures.

Emergency Teams Rush In to Contain the Blaze

Thankfully, EMS teams were quick on the scene and have been working hard to bring the fire under control.

Khumalo confirmed that no injuries have been reported so far, and emergency personnel are doing everything they can to limit the damage.

She also urged residents in the area to stay away from the scene while operations continue, emphasizing safety as a top priority.

Public Urged to Stay Clear as Fire Is Contained

While the immediate threat appears to be under control, the EMS is still monitoring the situation closely.

Authorities have warned locals not to enter the affected zone, and crews remain on site to ensure the fire doesn’t reignite or spread further.

A Scare for One of South Africa’s Iconic Brands

SAB is one of South Africa’s most well-known and long-standing companies, making this incident particularly unsettling for many.

Thankfully, early intervention seems to have kept the worst from happening.
