Elon Musk Opens Up About His 12 Children and the Struggles of Parenthood While Advocating for Larger Families in the Face of Declining Birth Rates Across the World

Elon Musk has always been outspoken about his desire for a big family.

In fact, he’s even claimed that civilization could collapse if people don’t start having more children.

Now 53 years old, Musk has fathered a total of 12 children with three different women.

His personal life has raised plenty of eyebrows, especially after he brought his four-year-old son to a press conference with former President Donald Trump in the Oval Office.

While Trump seemed captivated by Musk’s child, X Æ A-12, even whispering in his ear at one point, Musk’s ex, Grimes, wasn’t thrilled about him being in the spotlight.

She later commented that her son shouldn’t be in public like that.

A few days after that, Musk caused more of a stir when he attended a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, bringing along three of his kids.

For Musk, it’s clear that family is a huge part of his life.

Musk’s Beliefs on Birth Rates and Family

At a Wall Street Journal event in 2021, Musk discussed what he sees as a major threat to society: declining birth rates.

He believes the world faces a real danger if more people don’t have children.

Musk even admitted that he’s trying to set a good example by having a large family himself.

At that time, he already had 11 kids, though his first child, Nevada, tragically died from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) at just 10 weeks old.

Let’s take a closer look at Musk’s growing brood.

Musk’s First Marriage: Justine Wilson and Their Six Children

Musk’s first marriage was to Canadian author Justine Wilson, with whom he had six children.

After their son Nevada’s death, they used IVF to continue growing their family.

In 2004, they welcomed twins Griffin and Xavier, though Xavier later transitioned to become Vivian and distanced herself from Musk.

Musk himself has been vocal about his disagreements with Vivian’s transition, even suggesting he was misled by doctors into agreeing to give her puberty blockers.

He has described losing his son as “killing” him, blaming the “woke mind virus” for the situation.

In addition to Griffin and Vivian, the couple also had triplets—Kai, Saxon, and Damian—in 2006.

However, Musk and Wilson divorced in 2008, and Wilson later wrote in an essay about feeling like more of an “employee” than a partner during their marriage.

Grimes and Their Three Children: A Complicated Relationship

In 2018, Musk began a relationship with Canadian musician Grimes (real name Claire Elise Boucher), and in May 2020, they welcomed their first child together, a son named X Æ A-12.

The unusual name created a media frenzy, especially when it was discovered that the name broke California’s naming laws.

They later altered it to X Æ A-Xii. Their second child, Exa Dark Sideræl, was born in December 2021 via surrogacy, and they welcomed their third child, Tao, in 2023.

Their relationship, however, has been far from smooth.

Despite describing Musk as her “best friend” and “the love of my life” at one point, Grimes later sued Musk over parental rights in 2023.

The two had been in an ongoing custody battle over their children, with Grimes accusing Musk of withholding access to the kids and even preventing them from seeing their terminally ill grandmother.

The legal fight, which included both California and Texas courts, left Grimes feeling financially strained, and she claimed it almost stopped her from making new music.

Shivon Zilis: The Neuralink Connection

In 2021, it was revealed that Musk had fathered twins with Shivon Zilis, one of his Neuralink employees.

Zilis, who had met Musk through OpenAI, gave birth to the twins, Strider and Azure, in June 2021.

Later, Musk confirmed the news, explaining that he was trying to help address the “underpopulation crisis.”

Zilis, a Yale graduate and former hockey player, has been reported as saying that Musk wanted smart people to have children, with Musk even suggesting he could be her sperm donor.

In 2024, Musk confirmed that he and Zilis had welcomed a third child together, though he kept the details private.

This growing family has sparked plenty of conversation, with Musk reiterating his desire to have as many children as he can while still being a good father.

He even bought a sprawling $35 million home in Austin, Texas, where he reportedly envisions his children living together.

The Push for Larger Families

Musk has long been an advocate for larger families, citing declining birth rates as a major threat to civilization.

He’s said that he wants as many children as he can handle, emphasizing that his goal is to balance his responsibilities as a father with his work as a tech entrepreneur.

While his family life continues to make headlines, Musk’s belief in the importance of having children remains clear, even if it comes with its own set of challenges and controversies.
