A normally quiet Friday evening in Newcastle’s Elswick area turned into a scene of chaos after a violent attack left two people seriously injured.
A woman in her 60s is now fighting for her life in hospital after suffering a serious head injury, while a man of a similar age remains in a stable condition with serious injuries.
Their families have been informed about their condition.
Emergency Response and Investigation Underway
Police and paramedics rushed to a property on Durham Street at around 6:45 pm.
A large police presence remains at the scene, and cordons have been set up as forensic teams continue to collect vital evidence.
Authorities have opened an attempted murder investigation, underlining the severity of the incident.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Atherton, who is leading the inquiry, assured the public that “extensive enquiries into this serious incident have already been carried out” and emphasized the importance of gathering all available information.
Multiple Arrests Made
Eight people have been taken into custody in connection with the attack.
These include several men arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, a man suspected of conspiracy to murder, and others suspected of assisting offenders.
All remain in police custody while investigations continue, as authorities work to piece together what happened that evening.
Police Seek Stolen Vehicle Information
The investigation has also led police to appeal for information about a stolen red Renault Twingo.
The vehicle was reportedly parked in the West End of Newcastle between 6:30 pm and 8 pm on Friday and was later recovered in Longbenton on Saturday morning.
Officers are asking anyone who may have seen the car or has information related to it to come forward, as even small details could prove crucial.
Message to the Community
Detective Chief Inspector Atherton urged the public to avoid speculation, both online and in the community, while reminding them that the investigation is ongoing.
“Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could prove vital,” he said.
He also thanked the community for their patience as enquiries continue and stressed Northumbria Police’s zero-tolerance approach to violence.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the police to help bring answers and justice for the victims and their families.
