Donald Trump Reiterates Threat to Impose 100% Tariffs on BRICS Nations Including South Africa Over Dollar Rivalry

As the deadline for trade action on Canada and Mexico looms, former US President Donald Trump has once again brought up the possibility of imposing steep tariffs on BRICS nations.

These countries—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—are part of a growing economic bloc that Trump claims could undermine the US dollar’s dominance.

Trump’s Warning to BRICS Countries

Trump reiterated his threat to impose 100% tariffs on the BRICS nations if they move forward with plans to create a new currency or back a rival to the US dollar.

The former president shared his thoughts on his Truth Social platform, stating, “The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar, while we stand by and watch, is OVER.”

He made it clear that the US would demand a commitment from these countries, warning that failure to do so would result in hefty tariffs.

“We are going to require a commitment from these seemingly hostile Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs,” Trump added, making his stance on the issue abundantly clear.

Upcoming Deadline for Tariffs on Canada and Mexico

Trump’s comments on BRICS came just days before a critical deadline.

The former president had previously set a deadline of February 1, where he would impose a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico unless both countries take stronger action to curb illegal immigration and prevent fentanyl trafficking into the United States.

This deadline adds pressure to the already tense trade discussions with neighboring countries.

Trump’s Tariff Threats Against China

In addition to BRICS nations, Trump has also threatened China, a key member of the BRICS bloc, with a 10% tariff on goods starting February 1.

This potential tariff is tied to a growing trade imbalance and accusations that China has been complicit in the influx of fentanyl into the US.
