From Doubts to Billboard Hot 100 Success
Doja Cat, who has faced skepticism regarding her rap skills in the past, has achieved a remarkable milestone by claiming the top spot on the prestigious Billboard Hot 100. This achievement is particularly notable as she becomes the first solo artist rapper to reach this position in over a year. On September 11th, the Los Angeles native rose to the pinnacle of the chart with her single “Paint the Town Red,” which has maintained a presence on the chart for five consecutive weeks since its early August release.
“Paint the Town Red” Climbs to the Top
Doja Cat’s latest track, “Paint the Town Red,” marks a significant success in her career, following her previous hit “Say So” featuring Nicki Minaj in 2020. The most recent Billboard report highlights the impressive statistics behind “Paint the Town Red,” including 32.1 million radio airplay audience impressions, 27.7 million streams, and 8,000 downloads.
A Shift in Musical Direction
At the beginning of the year, Doja Cat made a public declaration regarding her musical direction, opting to transition away from her pop star persona and focus on honing her rap skills. In April, she took to Twitter to share her intentions of adopting a fresh approach to her music, stating, “No more pop.” She acknowledged critiques of her rap verses being perceived as mediocre and expressed her determination to prove her abilities in this genre.
A Move Away from Pop
When questioned about her decision to shift away from pop music, Doja Cat clarified that it was not solely influenced by critics. Instead, she revealed that pop music no longer held the same appeal for her.
Upcoming Performance at the 2023 VMAs
Recent reports suggest that Doja Cat has received a coveted invitation to perform at the highly anticipated 2023 VMAs. This prestigious event, featuring numerous A-list artists, is set to be held live on September 12th at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Among the notable performers scheduled to grace the stage alongside Doja Cat are Lil Wayne, Demi Lovato, Karol G, and Shakira.
