In a recent development, Stellenbosch FC forward Devin Titus has been called up to replace Mihlali Mayambela in the Bafana Bafana squad for the upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifying matches.
The team is set to face Uganda away on November 15, 2024, and will host South Sudan at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town on November 19, 2024.
South Africa’s Road to AFCON 2025
The South African national team has already gathered for training ahead of these crucial qualifiers, with the possibility of securing a spot in next year’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Players reported to camp on November 11 to begin preparations for the two upcoming matches, which are vital for their qualification hopes.
Mihlali Mayambela’s Injury
Unfortunately, Bafana will have to do without Mayambela, who picked up an injury while playing for his Cypriot club, Aris Limassol, over the weekend.
The winger, who has been a regular starter under coach Hugo Broos since 2021, will miss out on representing South Africa.
Mayambela played an instrumental role in Bafana’s third-place finish at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast earlier this year.
Devin Titus’ Call-Up
In place of Mayambela, Titus, who has been in excellent form for Stellenbosch FC, will join the squad.
Titus has made 17 appearances across all competitions for his club this season, scoring three goals and providing two assists.
His strong performances have earned him the opportunity to step up for Bafana.
Titus Heads to Johannesburg
SAFA confirmed that Titus is en route to Johannesburg to join the team at Dobsonville Stadium for training.
Coach Hugo Broos commented, “Unfortunately, Mayambela will not join us in camp, and he will be replaced by Devin Titus from Stellenbosch FC.”
Titus will join his teammates, Fawaaz Basadien and Sage Stephens, who are also part of the national team setup.
Jayden Adams’ Absence from the Squad
Meanwhile, Stellenbosch midfielder Jayden Adams is notably missing from the squad following a fallout with Broos during the previous FIFA international break.
Although Adams was initially named in the preliminary squad, he did not make the final 23-man roster for these matches.
Bafana Bafana now sets its sights on securing victories in these qualifiers as they aim to secure their place in next year’s AFCON tournament.
