David Parker announces the Appointment round for Queen’s Counsel

Attorney-General David Parker confirmed today that a Queen’s Counsel appointment round will be held in 2022.
On the proposal of the Attorney-General and with the consent of the Chief Justice, the Governor-General appoints Queen’s Counsel.

The Governor-General retains the power to designate Queen’s Counsel for exceptional contributions to the law in areas other than advocacy.

Guidelines for Candidates have been provided by the Chief Justice and the Attorney General. Following a consultation process, the Guidelines were amended in 2019 to incorporate a new criterion of a commitment to increasing access to justice.

“In recommending barristers to take silk I want to have a good understanding of each applicant’s personal contribution to advancing better access to justice for those who need it. It will be an important factor in my decisions,” Attorney-General David Parker said.

The Guidelines (together with an application form) are accessible at www.crownlaw.govt.nz and outline the appointment criteria as well as other details regarding the procedure.

On June 20, 2022, applications for Queen’s Counsel will be accepted.
Concerning the nominees, the Solicitor-General will communicate with the New Zealand Law Society and the New Zealand Bar Association. Appointments are likely to be made in October 2022.
