Flyhalf Dan Biggar will continue leading Wales against the Springboks in mid-year, just as he did during the 2022 Six Nations.
BBC Sport has reported that, while Alun Wyn Jones will most likely be included in the touring squad, it’s widely expected that Biggar will wear the captain’s armband.
Jones captained the British & Irish Lions against the Springboks last year, and went on to win his 150th cap in the historic final-round loss to Italy in the 2022 Six Nations.
The veteran 36-year-old lock has been captain of Wales since 2017 during which time they won the Six Nations titles in 2019 and 2021.
But since recovering from a shoulder injury, he has only had three outings for Ospreys.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that Wales will be forced close on a ‘B’ squad to Mzansi as a host of first-choice players are unavailable for selection.
They include among others Justin Tipuric, Ken Owens, Willis Halaholo, Aaron Wainwright, Leigh Halfpenny, Tomos Williams, Josh Adams, Ross Moriarty, Wyn Jones and Johnny McNicholl.
On a more positive note, George North is set to be named in the squad, having played two games for the Ospreys after returning from an injury that kept him out of action for 12 months.
Wales will play three Tests against the Springboks on 2 July (Pretoria), 9 July (Bloemfontein) and 16 July (Cape Town).
