Cristian Romero shares emotional farewell to Ange Postecoglou and subtly criticises Tottenham leadership in North London

It didn’t take long for emotions to bubble to the surface at Tottenham Hotspur following the club’s announcement of Thomas Frank as the new head coach.

While fans were still digesting the news, defender Cristian Romero jumped on Instagram to post a heartfelt – and slightly pointed – farewell to former boss Ange Postecoglou.

His post wasn’t just a thank-you note.

It also seemed to come with a thinly veiled jab at those behind the scenes at the club, hinting at underlying frustration with the way things are run.

Romero Pens Emotional Farewell to Postecoglou

Romero didn’t hold back in praising Postecoglou, who was sacked despite leading Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years – a Europa League win that meant everything to the squad and supporters.

“Ange, thank you for these two incredible seasons,” he wrote.

“You’re a fantastic coach, but above all, a great person who deserves the best.

From day one you paved the way despite the many obstacles that always existed and always will exist.”

That last line – “obstacles that always existed and always will exist” – raised eyebrows, as it seemed to point squarely at chairman Daniel Levy and the Spurs hierarchy.

For many, it read like a public airing of frustrations that have simmered quietly behind the scenes for some time.

Players Still Loyal to the Aussie Despite Exit

Romero wasn’t the only one to pay tribute.

Much of the squad has expressed sadness over Postecoglou’s departure, underscoring just how popular the Australian coach was among his players.

Even though Spurs finished a dismal 17th in the Premier League, their Europa League triumph gave the team something to hold onto – and Postecoglou’s presence in the dressing room remained a major unifier.

Now, with Thomas Frank stepping in from Brentford, the big challenge will be winning over a squad still very much loyal to the man they just lost.

What Does This Mean for Romero’s Future?

Romero’s Instagram message may have been emotional, but it also added fuel to rumours about his own future at the club.

His loyalty to Postecoglou has sparked speculation that he may be open to leaving, especially if things don’t click under the new manager.

Spanish side Atletico Madrid are reportedly interested, though Spurs won’t let him go for cheap.

They’re said to value the Argentine centre-back at over £60 million.

Postecoglou himself had nothing but praise for Romero after their Europa League victory, calling him a “winner” and noting how his presence boosts the confidence of those around him.

“It’s a no-brainer to keep players like him,” he said at the time.

A Big Task Ahead for Thomas Frank

Frank now has a mountain to climb. Winning over a dressing room that still feels bruised by Postecoglou’s exit won’t be easy.

The Dane signed a three-year deal after Spurs paid Brentford over £10 million to activate his release clause.

With expectations high and emotions still raw, he’ll need to move quickly to earn trust, stabilize morale, and convince key players like Romero that North London is still the right place for their careers.
