The number of people who contracted the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) exceeded 500 million worldwide.

According to Reuters tally, 6,589,178 have died since the pandemic first broke out in the world.

The high number of infections is due to the outbreak of the highly contagious “PA2” sub-mutant of the “Omicron” strain in many countries in Europe and Asia.

South Korea leads the world in terms of the daily average number of new infections, registering more than 182,000 new infections daily, which represents one in every four cases globally.

Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in December 2019.
