Recently, Matthew Lani, a controversial figure known for his provocative content, has opened up about his current living situation.
Following a high-profile arrest last year for impersonating a medical doctor, Lani’s life has taken a drastic turn, leading him to seek shelter.
A Difficult Transition to Homelessness
After the incident in 2023, which garnered significant media attention, Lani faced the harsh reality of losing both his home and his car.
In a candid TikTok video, he shared that he hasn’t been active on social media lately due to lacking a cellphone.
Currently, he resides in a shelter alongside his mother, navigating the challenges of homelessness.
“I’ve been in the shelter for four months now,” he explained.
“It is tough, but it’s certainly better than being out on the street.”
Lani admitted that entering a shelter was a humbling experience, as he had to overcome the stigma associated with such facilities.
“I had to swallow my pride and recognize the situation I’m in.”
Financial Hardships and New Dependencies
Lani revealed that he now relies on a government grant of R350 to make ends meet.
“Without a phone and no income, life has become incredibly difficult,” he lamented.
He used to provide counseling to HIV patients in exchange for money, but that source of income has disappeared.
“Now, I look forward to receiving that R350 grant,” he said, highlighting the stark contrast in his circumstances.
This situation has also taken a toll on his mother, who has been struggling with depression due to their living conditions.
Lani continues to assert that his past actions were justified and remains focused on clearing his name amidst allegations of his medical qualifications.
The Rise and Fall of Matthew Lani
Lani’s notoriety began in 2023 when he gained attention for pretending to be a doctor.
Clad in medical scrubs, he filmed content at a hospital, providing medical advice and selling weight-loss products.
This led to public outcry and calls for an investigation into his claims.
Both the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and the Gauteng Health Department confirmed that he was not a licensed medical professional.
Moreover, Wits University disputed Lani’s assertions that he had graduated from their institution.
Although the charge of impersonating a medical doctor was ultimately dropped due to insufficient evidence, Lani is determined to seek justice.
He is currently pursuing legal action against several entities, claiming that their actions have damaged his reputation and led to his current plight.
Looking Ahead
As Lani navigates these tumultuous times, it remains to be seen what the future holds for him.
With a mix of determination and a desire to restore his name, he continues to face the repercussions of his past decisions while seeking a path toward stability and redemption.
