Msgr. Thomas W. Powers, a Connecticut priest, has been named the next rector of the Pontifical North American College seminary (NAC) in Rome by the Vatican.

Powers, a priest from the Diocese of Bridgeport in Connecticut, attended the NAC and graduated in 1997.

From 2005 until 2015, he also lived at the seminary for nearly ten years while serving in the Vatican’s Congregation for Bishops. During that time, he also served as an adjunct spiritual director for NAC seminarians.

The seminary’s current rector, Father Peter Harman, announced on March 30 that Powers’ term will begin on July 1.

Harman, who will step down as rector at the end of June after a six-year stint, described the new priest as “brilliant, giving, devoted, and holy.”

Although being asked to serve as the future Rector of the Pontifical North American College was not something I had anticipated or wanted, I am grateful for the opportunity. “I entrust myself to Our Blessed Mother, Our Lady of Humility, in accepting this assignment, and I pray the Lord to grant me the grace to faithfully execute this role,” Powers said in a statement.

Powers has been back in Connecticut since 2015, where he serves as the Diocese of Bridgeport’s vicar general and moderator of the curia, as well as a parish pastor.

Powers worked as a financial consultant for Anderson Consulting in New York prior to his ordination in 1997.

“While we will miss him greatly in the Diocese of Bridgeport, both as vicar general and as pastor,” he stated, “I am delighted for the college.”

“Msgr. Powers is particularly well-suited to serve as our next Rector, given his considerable expertise in seminary education, his many pastoral abilities, and his prior work in Church governance and administration,” stated Bishop Robert Deeley of Portland, Maine, chairman of the NAC board of directors. We are grateful to him for accepting our nomination.
