CONFIRMED: Bongani Zungu is a free agent… will Chiefs pounce?

Bongani Zungu is set to leave French Ligue 2 side Amiens, and will be able to sign a pre-contract with a club such as Kaizer Chiefs.

Zungu, who played several matches for Bafana Bafana and could now be a sought-after recruit for Chiefs, signed for Scottish club Rangers on loan from Amiens in October 2020.

Rangers also secured an option to sign him permanently for a £2.7 million transfer fee. However, his first association with Amiens began when he joined the club from Vitoria Guimarares in 2017.

The 29-year-old is entering the final two months of his contract, and with his game time for Amiens proving to be sporadic, it’s now been confirmed that he is longer part of the club’s plans going forward.

“We’ve held talks with the club about a new contract, but my decision is that I will be leaving,” Zungu said when contacted by SABC Sport.

“I am a free agent now and my agent will be looking at my next move. Hopefully it will be another project that I can get excited about. We will know in the coming weeks, for now I can’t really discuss the options that are available.”

With his experience and talent, Zungu would surely be the ideal signing for Amakhosi, who are determined to bolster their squad ahead of next season.

Zungu himself recently stated that he hadn’t previously spoken with Amiens about his future.

“This is life! I am a good player, I know it, and if I invest, if I work hard, I can find a club in Ligue 1 or anywhere else in the world,” he said, as per Le11Amienois two weeks ago.

“This is an option, if we do not agree during discussions.”

Chiefs are in fourth position on the DStv Premiership log as the season draws to a close

Chiefs will next be in action with one final PSL game against Swallows.
