Community leaders seek financial support for vigilante groups

Some community leaders in Kaduna have urged that the state government should provide funding to vigilante groups so as to strengthen community policing.

 
This was mentioned during visit to community leaders at Ungwan Rimi in Kaduna.

 
 
One of them, Malam Isiyaku Garba of Kawo community, said vigilante groups have been working to reduce the menace of insecurity in the state and deserve support and encouragement from government.

 
 
He stated that government should assist such groups with logistics, uniform and allowances to boost their morale.

 
 
“If government can be paying them allowances monthly, they can go places and that would enable us sleep with our eyes close, he said.

              
Adding that at community level we have been supporting them with working tools for regular night patrols, even though they are being paid nothing, but still do it for humanity and to sanitize the communities.

 
While called for the training of community leaders in other to mediate and enhance peaceful coexistence within communities.

 
 
Garba said such training would promote mutual respect, religious harmony, oneness and cooperation in dealing with contentious issues within the communities.

 
 
The community leader urged people to shun ethnic and religious bigotry and live together in peace and harmony.

 
He said there are need for continuous engagement at community level to tame issues that would lead to conflict.

The District Head of Tudun Wada Alhaji Gambo Ibrahim, called for the creation of platforms at community level for more engagement among members.

 
 
He said that such platforms would help to step down peace messages in various dialects for people to appreciate the importance of peaceful coexistence.
