Former Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies star, Chuene Morifi, is embarking on a new chapter in her career with the Turkish women’s football club, Beylerbeyi.
The 33-year-old winger has signed a one-year contract with the team and is eager to showcase her skills in hopes of securing a longer stay in Turkey.
Morifi has been a key player for Banyana Ba Style since 2017, where she earned a reputation as one of the most accomplished players in the team’s history.
Her impressive list of achievements includes multiple SASOL Women’s Championship titles, four Hollywoodbet Super League titles, two COSAFA CAF Women’s Qualifiers titles, and two CAF Women’s Champions League trophies.
Known for her versatility, Morifi has played as a full-back winger, contributing both defensively and offensively.
Why Turkey? Morifi’s Decision to Join Beylerbeyi
Morifi had offers from several countries across Europe, including France, Mexico, and Turkey.
However, it was her connection with Beylerbeyi’s coaching staff that swayed her decision. She mentioned that the personal interactions with the head coach and technical director via video calls were instrumental in her choice.
“We’ve been discussing a move to Europe for a while with my agency,” Morifi shared with FARPost. “Over the past few months, we received offers from various European countries, but I felt a strong connection with the technical team at Beylerbeyi.
They took the time to communicate with me and explain their vision for the club.”
Settling into Life in Turkey
Since her arrival, Morifi has been adjusting well to her new environment.
She noted that the people have been very welcoming and that her integration into the team has been smooth.
“I’m settling in nicely,” she said.
“The people here are friendly and the climate is warm, though it’s quite hot with the summer heat. The club and my new teammates have been incredibly supportive, and I’m enjoying the training sessions so far.”
