Christina Applegate has revealed that her doctor has told her she does not have multiple sclerosis (MS), leaving the actress struggling to understand the cause of the debilitating symptoms that have affected her life since 2021.

The 54-year-old actress disclosed the news during a new episode of her MeSsy podcast, which she co-hosts with fellow actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler.

Applegate became emotional while describing the unexpected conversation with her doctor and the uncertainty surrounding her condition.

Applegate Says Doctor Reversed Her MS Diagnosis

Recalling the moment her doctor delivered the news, Applegate said the physician entered her hospital room and told her: “Congratulations, you don’t have MS.”

Rather than feeling relieved, the actress said she was unhappy with the announcement, despite others around her celebrating the news.

“I was, like, not happy at all. Everybody else was so happy,” she said.

Applegate explained that the news had left her questioning what had happened to her health over the past five years.

She said her symptoms had not improved and that she felt her condition had become worse.

“You don’t get misdiagnosed and then all of a sudden I’m better. I haven’t gotten better, Jamie! If anything, I’ve gotten worse,” she told Sigler.

The actress said her doctors would need to investigate her medical history and symptoms to establish what had been happening since 2021.

Actress Describes Emotional Toll of Uncertainty

Applegate said the possibility that she had been misdiagnosed had left her in a state of shock and confusion.

She described the situation as a “mindf**k” and said she was struggling to process the news after years of believing she had MS.

The actress also spoke about the emotional consequences of living with the symptoms and how the condition had affected her professional and personal life.

“I’ve gone through a great depression because of it,” she said.

Applegate added that she had lost her job and experienced major changes to her daily routine while dealing with her illness.

She said she still needed a wheelchair to attend medical appointments because she could not walk from her car to the examination room.

“Nothing magical happened when she said, ‘You don’t have MS.’ Nothing magical happened,” she said.

The actress added that she felt she had let people down because she and Sigler had become prominent public figures sharing their experiences with MS.

She also explained that her diagnosis had given her an explanation for the daily difficulties she experienced, making the new information particularly difficult to process.

“Now I don’t have a reason and it’s very unnerving and it’s very confusing for me,” she said.

Applegate Continues to Experience Mobility Problems

The actress has relied on a wheelchair and cane for years and has stepped away from much of her acting career because of her health struggles.

In February, she told People magazine that pain had left her spending much of her time in bed.

Despite her difficulties, Applegate said she continued to make efforts to take her teenage daughter, Sadie, to school.

“I want to take her; it’s my favorite thing to do. It’s the only time we have together by ourselves,” she said.

She explained that she would focus on getting her daughter to school safely before returning home to rest.

Applegate also spoke candidly about her circumstances, saying her life had not been neatly resolved and that she wanted to be honest about the difficulties she faced.

Actress Was Hospitalised for Several Months

Applegate was hospitalised in Los Angeles in late March and reportedly returned home in August, according to TMZ.

Details about the reason for her extended hospital stay were not made public.

It was also unclear whether the hospitalisation was connected to her previously reported MS diagnosis or other medical conditions.

In April, the actress addressed her health in a social media post, thanking followers for their messages of support and saying she was becoming stronger.

“Health issues are a constant for me, but I’m a strong chick and I’m getting stronger and better every day,” she wrote.

She also said she was taking time to focus on her health and would share more when she was ready.

At the time, her representative declined to comment on whether she was in hospital or on the medical treatment she was receiving, but acknowledged that she had a long history of complicated medical conditions that she had discussed openly in her memoir and podcast.

Applegate Previously Revealed Frequent Hospital Visits

During an earlier episode of MeSsy, Applegate disclosed that she had been hospitalised more than 30 times in the three years following her MS diagnosis.

“For three years since I was diagnosed, I’ve been in the hospital upwards of 30 times,” she told Sigler.

She also described undergoing numerous medical tests, including CT scans.

Applegate announced her MS diagnosis on social media in August 2021.

The following year, she shared a photograph of her walking canes and described needing assistance with mobility as her “new normal.”

Her latest revelation has left her seeking further medical answers about the symptoms that have continued despite her doctor’s statement that she does not have MS.

Memoir Details Her Experience With Chronic Symptoms

Applegate discussed her health struggles in her memoir, You With the Sad Eyes, which was released on March 3, 2026.

An excerpt published by The Guardian in March described the exhaustion she had experienced while dealing with her illness.

“One of the worst side-effects of the illness is the exhaustion,” she wrote, explaining that she could feel as though she had gone several days without sleep even after a good night’s rest.

The actress said her experiences had also changed her attitude towards speaking openly about difficult subjects and what she considered unimportant.

Applegate rose to prominence as a teenager playing Kelly Bundy in the Fox sitcom Married… with Children, which aired from 1987 to 1997.

She later starred in numerous film and television productions, including the Netflix series Dead to Me.

Her representatives had not responded to the Daily Mail’s request for comment on the latest development at the time of publication.
