In a dramatic twist to a lengthy divorce saga, Charmaine De Souza is now pushing for her ex-husband, Richard Rothschild, and his mother, Wanda Radziszewska, to face jail time.
The conflict stems from Richard’s alleged failure to pay Charmaine nearly £750,000 in divorce settlements. The couple, who ended their 21-year marriage in 2016, have been entangled in legal disputes ever since, with the latest chapter unfolding this week.
Richard Rothschild, a 49-year-old entrepreneur, has been embroiled in a contentious court battle with Charmaine De Souza, 50. Their legal woes began in earnest back in 2018, shortly after Richard moved his new girlfriend, Sherra Michelle, into their former luxury condo in Miami.
By 2019, a High Court judge had split their assets, awarding Charmaine £1.73 million and leaving Richard with just £634,000.
Richard claimed he was left nearly penniless and had to move in with his mother.
This week, the court addressed a new issue: Charmaine claims that Richard and Wanda have obstructed the sale of their former west London apartment, valued at £1.225 million.
Wanda currently resides in the apartment, and Charmaine alleges that this delay has exacerbated her financial troubles, leaving her with crippling debt.
Previous court orders had mandated the sale of the property and Wanda’s removal to ensure Charmaine could collect a significant portion of the funds owed to her.
Charles Hale KC, representing Charmaine, argued that the ongoing legal delays and breaches of court orders have put her under severe financial strain.
He described the behavior of Richard and Wanda as deliberate and obstructive, aimed at frustrating attempts to resolve the matter.
Despite juggling the demands of being a single parent and running a business, Charmaine has had to manage much of the legal process herself, a burden he said was taking a toll on her.
A Strained Relationship
The roots of this dispute trace back to 2016 when Richard and Charmaine ended their marriage.
They had once enjoyed a high-flying lifestyle, including a Lamborghini and a multimillion-dollar condo in Miami.
After their separation, the legal battles intensified, with Richard moving Sherra Michelle into their former home and claiming sole ownership of the Miami property.
In December 2019, the judge divided their assets, granting Charmaine the mobile phone business they ran together, along with additional properties and cash.
Richard received the Miami apartment, which he contended was worth less than the court’s valuation, leaving him with little capital or income after settling family debts.
Despite challenging the divorce settlement in 2020, Richard’s appeal was unsuccessful.
Next Steps
With mounting financial pressures and ongoing legal challenges, Charmaine is now calling for immediate imprisonment for Richard and Wanda.
She argues that their refusal to comply with court orders is not only unjust but is also causing significant financial damage to her.
The situation remains fluid, with the potential for further legal and financial repercussions for all parties involved.
