A newly released white paper from the Chief FOIA Officer (CFO) Council Technology Committee’s Data Working Group (DWG) is now available on FOIA.gov.
The document outlines the group’s findings after interviewing various FOIA programs to better understand how they manage data and respond to requests for information.
Exploring Data Usage Across Federal Agencies
The DWG interviewed ten different federal agencies, each varying in size and mission, to gain insight into how they use data in their everyday operations.
These discussions helped uncover common trends across the federal government and highlighted areas where improvements could be made in handling data and responding to requests.
Key Findings and Recommendations
The white paper revealed several important observations, including the following key points:
-
Tracking Data Beyond the Basics
While all FOIA agencies track the necessary metrics for annual reporting, many agencies could benefit from tracking additional data beyond what’s required. This could improve operations and decision-making across the board. -
Using Data Analysis to Stay Ahead
By analyzing data, FOIA managers and agency leaders can better spot emerging trends within their programs. This proactive approach helps in adjusting responses and anticipating future needs. -
Simplifying Complex Requests
Handling FOIA requests for agency data can often be complex and time-consuming. -
Having a well-organized plan in place to manage these requests could streamline the process, and in some cases, enable agencies to disclose information proactively, reducing the need for future requests.
-
Collaboration with Chief Data Officers
Building partnerships with Chief Data Officers (CDOs) within agencies can significantly enhance the efficiency of FOIA operations, ensuring that data handling is as effective as possible.
Encouraging Public and Agency Participation
The DWG encourages agency FOIA professionals, agency leadership, and the public to review the white paper for further insights and recommendations.
