The Consular and Diaspora Affairs Division within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Tourism – Foreign Affairs Department hosted a virtual meeting this afternoon with its counterparts in Cabo Verde to exchange on diaspora engagement.

As the Department is strengthening its diaspora unit, it requested assistance from Cabo Verde, which has a well-established structure for the involvement of its diaspora. The exchange for gaining knowledge and sharing experiences included presentations from both sides, mainly from Cabo Verde, on the historical development of Cabo Verdean emigration, national migration policies and programs for the Cabo Verdean diaspora.

This exchange was also the opportunity to strengthen the relationship and capacity of Cabo Verde and Seychelles and develop migration programs in the context of both countries being small island developing states.  It was also agreed to explore the possibility of having reciprocating study tours in Cabo Verde and Seychelles to consolidate this process further.

In giving more importance to the role and contribution of the diaspora in the country’s socio-economic development, the Government of Seychelles, with the support of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), is expected to develop a national policy as it intensifies its diaspora engagement.

Ana Jaqueline Marques da Silva, Special Advisor to the Minister of Communities headed the Cabo Verde delegation, together with senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Regional Integration.

While Jacques Belle, Director General for Consular and Diaspora Affairs headed the Seychelles delegation, along with senior officials from the Department, representatives from the Employment Department, Industry Department and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

A representative from the IOM was also present for the meeting.Distributed by APO Group on behalf of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Tourism – Foreign Affairs Department, Republic of Seychelles.
