The City of Cape Town is preparing for some essential maintenance work in April that could disrupt water and electricity services in various parts of the city.
The scheduled maintenance will affect different areas over the coming weeks, so residents are urged to be prepared.
Here’s everything you need to know about the planned disruptions.
Water Supply Interruptions in Somerset West and Simon’s Town
Starting on Tuesday, 1 April, the City of Cape Town’s water and sanitation directorate will begin planned maintenance, which will temporarily cut off water supply in some areas.
Residents are advised to store water in advance and prepare accordingly.
Somerset West
On Tuesday, 1 April, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, parts of Somerset Ridge, Westridge, and Garden Village will experience a water outage.
This interruption is due to the installation of a control valve at the corner of Disa Street and West Street in Westridge.
The water supply will be shut off at the reservoir for safety purposes during the installation, but once the valve is in place, it will help reduce the affected areas in future outages.
Simon’s Town
On Wednesday, 2 April, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, large parts of Simon’s Town will experience a water shutdown.
This disruption is necessary for the connection of newly installed water pipelines along Wickboom Lane, Thomas Street, Water Lane, and Rickett’s Close to the existing water infrastructure.
Critical Electricity Maintenance Across Cape Town
In addition to the water disruptions, Cape Town residents can expect some planned electricity interruptions.
The electricity maintenance work will take place over four weeks, starting 1 April, in Surrey Estate and Heideveld.
The maintenance will be done on specific dates throughout the month, which will affect electricity supply in these areas.
Maintenance Schedule
The scheduled maintenance will occur on 1, 9, 24, and 30 April, between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM.
If all goes to plan, these interruptions will only affect the highlighted areas on the map provided by the City.
Residents in the impacted areas should prepare for power outages on the specified dates.
How to Prepare for the Maintenance
Residents in the affected areas are encouraged to plan ahead to ensure minimal disruption to their daily routines. Here are a few tips on how to prepare:
-
For water outages: Store enough water in advance, especially if you live in Somerset West or Simon’s Town.
-
For power outages: Consider charging devices ahead of time, and make sure to have backup lighting available, like candles or battery-powered lamps.
